Web Sites of Interest
This tutorial, hosted by the University of Guelph, shows exactly what a 555 timer is, its properly use, either by itself or in combination with other solid state devices, without the requirement of an engineering degree. The website contents are enormous; the amount of information presented is almost overwhelming at points. The author does good work in making it accessible, for the most part, though. The site contains text, diagrams and illustrations to present the information.
This website on electronics is set up to explain electronics, how it works, and how it relates to the mad lab parts for their electronic kits. The lessons are free and gives good basic information for the beginner. MadLab presents an absolute beginner's guide to electronics. Following this short course (7 lessons) will lead you from basic ideas about electronics right up to an understanding of how the simple MadLab kits actually work. In this course you will learn what electrons are and what they do; what the different types of electronic components are and how they work; and how components connect together to make a complete circuit. Along the way you will learn useful things like the resistor colour code and how to read a circuit diagram. And don't worry - this is electronics without mathematics. This rough guide answers some of the most common questions about electronics: What are a.c. and d.c. ? What is Ohm's Law ? What is the difference between current and voltage ? What exactly does a transistor do ?
